Donate to our 2019 Weaving Education Campaign
Traditions are a living thing: they must be fed and nurtured. Please donate to the 2019 Andean Weaving Education Campaign, to help ensure that today’s Andean textile techniques are passed to the next generation and that the weavers can continue to recover and preserve ancient techniques that would otherwise be lost.
This year, our holiday fundraising goal of $10,000 will help support education programs in the weaving communities supported by the Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco (CTTC). In addition to the center’s ongoing program for young weavers, Maria José Murillo, CTTC’s new education supervisor, has a 2020 wish list that includes:
- Restructuring the weaving, braiding, knitting and other classes offered at CTTC in Cusco to satisfy growing interest from visiting travelers and from the local Peruvian community. Interest in indigenous textiles from urban Peruvians is a huge mark of the CTTC’s success, and the opportunity to teach builds leadership skills and pride in the weavers.
- Creating a weaving library in each weaving community to document and preserve their traditional patterns and techniques, and also growing and improving the shared resource library at CTTC in Cusco.
- Starting a Young Weaver’s Group for weavers from the communities who are going to college in Cusco, so they can continue their weaving practice and to foster friendships and exchange among their communities.
- Starting a new project to recover or extend a specific weaving skill within the communities, as the education department most recently did with the Paracas looping technique.
Your donations will sponsor class development and class materials, bookshelves and binders, transportation for weavers to attend classes or study museum textiles, and much more. And for any donation over $50, we will send you an exclusive ebook full of information on Andean techniques and patterns, plus some tasty Peruvian recipes!
Thank you for helping preserve and revitalize these precious textile traditions.
Help us reach our $10,000 goal!
